Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • The material is simple and stated: “Just iron and oil”, with “no PFOAs, no PTFEs, no synthetic coatings”, according to Field.
    • Field says the skillet is “100% Made in the USA”, poured from recycled iron in green sand castings.
    • It arrives pre-seasoned with three coats of organic grapeseed oil, and Field says it is “compatible with all stovetop burner types, including glass and ceramic induction ranges”.
    • The No. 8 weighs about 4.3 lb. Lodge’s 10.25 in classic skillet is 5.7 lb.
    • The warranty terms are written down: Field will replace cookware that arrives damaged or “cracks, breaks, or warps under normal cooking conditions”, for the life of the product. There is also a 45-day trial.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • It costs about six times a Lodge skillet of similar size. The extra money buys weight and finish, not a different material.
    • The warranty excludes surface problems. Field says sticking, uneven seasoning and light rust “aren’t defects”.
    • Hand wash only and never the dishwasher, per Field. The page gives no maximum oven temperature.
    • It adds iron to food, as all cast iron does. Our cast iron article covers who should take care.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Cast iron needs no coating, which is why it is the first answer in our cookware guide to the non-stick problem. The usual complaint is weight. Field Company makes its No. 8 with thinner walls and a polished surface, so it weighs about 4.3 lb against 5.7 lb for a standard 10.25 in skillet.

What we like here is the plainness. Field says what the pan is made of, where it is made and what it is seasoned with, and it publishes its warranty, including what the warranty does not cover. The iron it adds to food is covered in our article on cast iron, seasoning and safety.

All of this is Field’s own account. We found no outside test, and the price is mostly for the finish and the weight. If you want the cheapest honest cast iron, buy the Lodge.
