Fresh Roasted Coffee Organic Peru Water-Processed Decaf Whole Bean
Reader ratings
A budget organic decaf made with a water process, which the product details call the Swiss Water Process. USDA lists it as organic and the roast date is on the bag. Mold and pesticide testing is the maker’s claim, with no lab named.
Best for Decaf drinkers who want a solvent-free process, organic beans and a low price, and can accept testing claims without a posted report.

How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- The decaf process is named. The product details list the Swiss Water Process, and the description says water-process decaffeination avoids “harsh compounds or chemicals”.
- USDA’s Organic Integrity Database lists Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC as certified through Pennsylvania Certified Organic (status effective 4 February 2015). Its scope names “Single Origin - Decaf Peruvian” and “Single Origin Peru Decaf”.
- A roast date is on a sticker at the bottom of the bag, in Julian-calendar code, and orders placed before the daily cutoff are roasted the same day (company FAQ).
- Price: about $16.99 for 12 oz, or $37.99 for 2 lb, about $1.19 an ounce.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- The process and the testing are the maker’s claims. The page says a certified third-party laboratory found no detectable mold, aflatoxin, ochratoxin or pesticides in the analyzed sample, but names no lab, date or lot. We found no independent record of the decaf plant.
- The page calls the process “water-processed” in its description and “Swiss Water Process” in its details. Swiss Water’s partner-roaster page is a selection and does not list this company, so we could not confirm the licence.
- No heavy-metal results are published.
- Organic does not mean residue-free. Clean Label Project found AMPA, a glyphosate breakdown product, in every organic coffee it tested in 2025.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Decaf has one extra question: how the caffeine was removed. Methylene chloride is still allowed in U.S. decaf, up to 10 parts per million (21 CFR 173.255), so we look for makers that name a water-based process. This Peru does, in two places on its page.
It is also one of the cheaper organic decafs we found. USDA’s organic database lists Fresh Roasted Coffee as a certified handler and names this decaf in its scope, and the company puts a roast date on every bag. Our guide to coffee and health notes that decaf keeps many of coffee’s benefits.
The gaps are the same as for the company’s regular Peru. The mold and pesticide testing is described but not documented, and we could not independently confirm the decaf plant. If those gaps matter to you, Purity’s decaf documents more, at roughly twice the price.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Chemical-free decaf Maker’s claim | The product details say Swiss Water Process and the description says water-process decaffeination without harsh chemicals. We could not confirm the plant or licence independently. |
| Organic or residue-tested Verified | Listed in the Organic Integrity Database as USDA Organic: Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC, with “Single Origin - Decaf Peruvian”, NOP ID 8210001615, certified by Pennsylvania Certified Organic. |
| Published lab tests Maker’s claim | The maker says a certified third-party laboratory found no detectable mold, aflatoxin, ochratoxin or pesticides. No lab name, date, lot or report is published. |
| A roast date Maker’s claim | On a white sticker at the bottom of the bag, in Julian-calendar code, per the company FAQ. We have not held a bag. |
| Hot coffee kept off plastic Maker’s claim | Sold as whole beans (or ground), so nothing hot touches the packaging. |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
