Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.
How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- The surface is porcelain enamel over cast iron, with nothing to season. Lodge states “Nontoxic cookware made without PFAS”.
- Lodge publishes what is in the enamel. Its California AB 1200 chart for all enameled cast iron lists iron, phosphorus, manganese, strontium, antimony compounds, nickel, copper and chromium compounds, and it lists no lead.
- The same chart says cadmium compounds are in “Red and Orange items only”. Items in other colors are not in that group, according to the chart.
- Limits are written down: any stovetop including induction, oven up to 500°F, hand wash recommended.
- The Made Right limited lifetime warranty covers enamel that chips, cracks or is damaged during normal cooking.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- If you buy red or orange, you get a pot Lodge says contains cadmium compounds. The chart does not say which surface, so choose another color, or ask Lodge before buying one of those.
- We found no outside lab test of lead or cadmium release. The chart lists what Lodge added, not what the pot releases.
- Lodge names two possible countries, China or Vietnam, and no factory.
- The warranty is void if you heat the pot empty, use metal utensils, stack it without pads, or use it on a campfire or in a microwave.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Enameled cast iron is the pot to reach for when you want cast iron’s heat but plan to cook tomatoes, wine or beans for a long time. Our cast iron article cites a lab test in which enameled iron released almost no iron, and our cookware guide lists the trade-offs: it chips if dropped and it is not non-stick.
The question with any colored enamel is what is in the glaze. Lodge’s answer is on its California disclosure page, and it is more specific than most: no lead listed, cadmium compounds in red and orange items only. That is why we tell you to buy a different color. The disclosure lists ingredients, not test results, so treat it as the maker’s statement.
At about $90 it costs a fraction of a French pot. What you give up is a named factory and an outside test.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| No PTFE or PFAS coating Maker’s claim | Porcelain enamel on cast iron. Lodge states “Nontoxic cookware made without PFAS”. We found no outside test of this claim. |
| Plain, named materials Maker’s claim | Enameled cast iron. Lodge’s AB 1200 chart lists the materials for all enameled colors and sizes. Origin is “China or Vietnam”, with no factory named. |
| Built to last Maker’s claim | Made Right limited lifetime warranty: enamel that chips or cracks in normal household use is replaced. Dishwasher use is not mentioned; hand washing is recommended. |
| Fits how you cook Maker’s claim | Any stovetop including induction. Oven safe to 500°F. Not for grills or fires. Metal utensils not recommended. 13.52 lb. |
| Lead and cadmium in the enamel Maker’s claim | No lead is listed. Cadmium compounds are listed for red and orange items only. This is Lodge’s disclosure, not a lab result. |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.

Alternatives Other options to compare
- Le Creuset Signature Round Dutch Oven Made in France, from about $285 for the 2 qt. Le Creuset’s own disclosure lists cadmium pigments for some colors, though not under food contact for the Flame pot we checked, so check the color before you buy.
- Lodge Classic Cast Iron Skillet Bare cast iron, no enamel, about $25 to $30. Needs seasoning and is reactive with acidic food.
