Marianne’s Harvest Organic Beef Tallow

Marianne’s Harvest Organic Beef Tallow

A one-ingredient, USDA organic beef tallow listed as Seed Oil Free Certified. The maker says the cattle are 100% grass-fed, which we could not confirm with a certifier, and the clear glass jar does not block light.

Best for Cooks who want a tallow for frying, searing and roasting with an organic certification and seed-oil testing behind it.

Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • The USDA Organic Integrity Database lists Adams Vegetable Oils, Inc. of Arbuckle, California as certified (by CCOF, since 09/15/2016), with “Beef (Beef Tallow)” in its handling scope. Marianne’s says it is made by Adams Group. The jar carries the USDA Organic seal.
    • The Seed Oil Free Alliance lists “Marianne’s Organic 100% Grass-Fed Beef Tallow” as certified. The program uses laboratory testing to look for undisclosed seed oils, a fair worry for a fat sold as pure.
    • The ingredient list is one line: organic beef tallow. A tablespoon (14 g) has 130 calories, 13 g of fat and 7 g of saturated fat.
    • The maker explains the method: rendered slowly in small batches from pasture-raised cattle, with a smoke point of up to 400°F.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • About half the fat is saturated (7 of 13 g a tablespoon). Our seed oil alternatives guide lists tallow as a stable fat for high heat but says saturated fat and heart health are still debated.
    • “100% grass-fed” is the maker’s claim. We found no grass-fed certifier listing: A Greener World’s directory returned no tallow, and the American Grassfed Association’s site would not load. Organic rules require pasture access, which is not the same thing.
    • The jar is clear glass, so it does not block light. The maker says to keep it sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, and to refrigerate it for longer freshness.
    • The label gives total and saturated fat only, not monounsaturated or polyunsaturated (omega-6) fat. No ranch or state is named, and we did not see a best-by date.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Tallow is rendered beef fat. Our seed oil alternatives guide lists it with ghee and avocado oil as a stable fat for high-heat cooking. Because it is a single-ingredient fat, the useful questions are how the cattle were raised and whether anything else was added.

Marianne’s tallow answers part of that with records we could open: a USDA organic certificate for the processor that covers beef tallow, and a seed-oil testing listing for this product. The 100% grass-fed claim is the maker’s own, with no grass-fed certifier behind it that we could find. About half the fat is saturated, so it suits occasional frying and roasting more than daily use.

The jar is clear glass. Keep it in a cupboard, or in the fridge as the maker suggests. For what the evidence says about oils under heat, see which oils are safe for high-heat cooking.

What we checked What we found
Purity you can check Verified The processor is in the USDA Organic Integrity Database with beef tallow in scope. The Seed Oil Free Alliance lists this tallow. We matched the USDA entry to Marianne’s by company name and city; Marianne’s names “Adams Group”, not the legal entity.
Fat profile stated Maker’s claim Label: 130 calories, 13 g fat and 7 g saturated fat per tablespoon. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat are not listed.
Made without solvents Maker’s claim Slow-rendered in small batches, per the maker. A rendered fat is made with heat, and no solvent is mentioned.
Packaging that blocks light, with a date Maker’s claim Clear glass jar with a metal lid, in the product photo. We did not see a date.
A traceable source Maker’s claim Cattle born and raised in the United States, pasture-raised, per the maker. No ranch or state is named.
100% grass-fed Maker’s claim The maker’s claim, on the jar and its page. No grass-fed certifier listing found.
    What the labels mean
    • Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
    • Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
    • Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
