Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • The page lists organic Dunlop latex, organic wool, an organic cotton cover and recycled steel coils. That is close to what our non-toxic alternatives guide recommends.
    • Three independent registries list the maker. MADE SAFE’s directory lists the Green Mattress as certified, OEKO-TEX’s label check shows a valid STANDARD 100 certificate owned by Avocado Mattress LLC, and the GOTS database lists Avocado Mattress, LLC with mattresses in its scope.
    • Avocado says wool is the fire barrier and that no chemical flame retardants are used. Our guide notes that is how organic mattresses meet flammability rules without added chemicals.
    • It names its other certificates and links to them: GOTS (license GOTS-18148 in the database; the page cites its Control Union number, CU 863637), and GREENGUARD Gold and UL formaldehyde-free verification through UL.
    • A 1-year sleep trial and a 25-year limited warranty.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 5 points
    • It is expensive: about $1,700 to $2,550 for a queen at current prices.
    • It contains natural latex, so it is not for people with a latex allergy.
    • Returns after 30 days cost $99 plus the original shipping, even within the 1-year trial.
    • OEKO-TEX’s lookup for certificate 24.HUS.86422 lists Product Class II, while Avocado’s page cites Class I. The certificate covers a range of bedding products, so the two may refer to different items. We could not tell.
    • We could not open UL’s SPOT ourselves, so GREENGUARD Gold stays the maker’s claim.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Our non-toxic alternatives guide explains why swapping a conventional mattress for an organic latex-and-wool one is among the higher-impact changes you can make: you spend about a third of your life on it. Avocado’s Green Mattress is built the way the guide describes, with natural latex, organic wool and cotton, and wool rather than chemicals as the fire barrier.

What makes it easy to assess is the certificate trail. Avocado lists numbers and links for each program. We could confirm three in the programs’ own directories (MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX and GOTS). The rest, including GREENGUARD Gold, are the maker’s claims until you check them yourself.

It costs a lot, and it contains natural latex. If the price is out of reach, the cheaper steps in our guide, airing a new mattress and using an organic cotton encasement, capture part of the benefit. For what off-gassing is and why it matters, see off-gassing.

EWG Verified Maker’s claim Avocado lists EWG Verified. EWG’s own page blocked our fetch, so we could not check it.
    What the labels mean
    • Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
    • Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
    • Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
