Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • The active ingredient is 15% zinc oxide, a mineral filter. FDA’s drug directory (NDC 79265-5708-1) and the DailyMed label for this 17 g stick list the same 15%, as an over-the-counter sunscreen drug. EWG’s entry for the stick agrees.
    • The rest is plant oils, waxes and butters (rice bran, avocado, jojoba, shea, tamanu, cocoa butter, candelilla wax and beeswax), plus octyldodecyl oleate, oryzanol, jojoba esters, bisabolol and tocopherol, with no fragrance. The product page and EWG also list sunflower seed oil, which the FDA label does not.
    • MADE SAFE’s directory lists it as certified “in all currently available sizes”. EWG’s Verified directory lists the stick too.
    • It meets the basics we look for in a sunscreen: broad spectrum SPF 30, 80 minutes of water resistance stated, and reapplication directions on the page.
    • Babo says all of its sunscreens use non-nano mineral filters.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • The SPF value is a label claim. The page says “Dermatologist Tested” but does not name the lab that tested SPF.
    • It is a small stick, which suits faces and small areas better than a whole body.
    • The stick is plastic: the page’s recycling label shows a plastic stick.
    • “Reef-safe” is not a rule you can rely on. Babo’s own FAQ calls it an unregulated statement.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Our guides to choosing a safe sunscreen and chemical versus mineral filters set out the case for mineral filters, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, over chemical ones. This stick is zinc oxide at 15% in oils and waxes, with no fragrance.

It earns its place through two outside listings that review each ingredient, MADE SAFE and EWG Verified, and through FDA’s drug directory, which lists the stick at 15% zinc oxide. What it does not have, on the page we read, is the name of the lab that tested SPF 30. As with any sunscreen, the stick only works if you apply enough and reapply it, at least every two hours and after swimming or sweating, as the page says.
