Personal care

Sunscreen, soap and skin care with a fully listed formula and an independent ingredient review.

What we look for
  • Every ingredient listed: including what is in “fragrance” or “parfum”, or no fragrance at all.
  • Independent screening: EWG Verified, MADE SAFE or the National Eczema Association Seal for the specific product.
  • Fragrance-free, not just “unscented”: unscented products can still contain masking fragrance.
  • For sunscreen: broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, water resistance stated, and an FDA Drug Facts label that matches the maker’s page. Lotions and sticks rather than sprays.
  • Short formulas: ingredient lists you can look up.
  • “Fragrance” or “parfum” hiding undisclosed mixtures.
  • Triclosan, parabens and phthalates on the label.
  • “Clean”, “non-toxic” or “reef-safe” with no definition. None of these terms is regulated.
  • Sunscreens with a past benzene finding and no current independent test.
