Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • MADE SAFE’s index lists “Body Wash” as certified in all sizes and in five scents, including “Free + Clear (Unscented)”.
    • Six ingredients, listed on the page for the Free & Clear wash: water, organic olive oil, potassium hydroxide, sodium chloride, organic shea butter and organic castor oil.
    • No essential oil or fragrance. The page says the Free & Clear wash is “made without fragrance or essential oils”, while the scented washes use organic essential oils.
    • Kosmatology says the formula has no parabens, petroleum-based ingredients or synthetic fragrance, and that it is made for dry and sensitive skin.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • It is a soap, made with potassium hydroxide, and Kosmatology does not state a pH. Soap is typically more alkaline than the roughly pH 5.5 our skin microbiome guide suggests for cleansers.
    • About $1.50 an ounce, against about $0.54 an ounce for Dr. Bronner’s 32 oz liquid soap.
    • The ingredient list and the “fragrance-free” claim are Kosmatology’s. MADE SAFE’s entry does not reproduce the ingredient list.
    • Kosmatology cites an EWG Skin Deep score of 1 to 2. That is EWG’s database score, not EWG Verified, and we could not confirm it.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Our guide to shampoo and body care says to pick fragrance-free body wash with recognizable ingredients. This one is six: water, three plant oils and butters, potassium hydroxide to turn them into soap, and salt. The unscented version leaves out the essential oils that the other scents use.

The independent check is MADE SAFE. Its own index lists Kosmatology’s body wash and names the unscented version, so we could see the certification in the certifier’s listing. The ingredient list and the fragrance-free claim still come from Kosmatology’s page.

The caution is the same as for any true soap. The skin microbiome guide suggests cleansers near pH 5.5, and soap is typically more alkaline. If your skin is dry or eczema-prone, watch how it responds. For a bar instead of a liquid, see the Meliora alternative below.
