Reader ratings
A four-ingredient zinc oxide sunscreen cream (22.5% zinc, SPF 40, 80-minute water resistance) on file with the FDA. We found no EWG Verified or MADE SAFE listing, and Badger does not name the lab that tested SPF.

How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- The formula is four ingredients: non-nano uncoated zinc oxide 22.5% as the active, plus organic sunflower seed oil, organic beeswax and tocopherol (sunflower vitamin E). The FDA’s DailyMed record carries the same list.
- The FDA lists it as an over-the-counter sunscreen drug (NDC 62206-4031-1, 87 mL tube, zinc oxide 22.5 g per 100 mL). The FDA label says “Broad Spectrum SPF 40” and “Water Resistant 80 min”.
- There is no fragrance, essential oil or preservative. The tube says “Unscented & Hypoallergenic”.
- Badger makes creams and sticks, not aerosol sprays. Its FAQ says the fine mist from aerosol sunscreens is too easy to inhale, which fits the caution in our sunscreen guide.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- The SPF 40, broad-spectrum and 80-minute claims are Badger’s. We found no SPF test report and no named lab.
- It is a thick, pale cream that has to be rubbed in, and Badger’s FAQ warns it can stain fabric.
- The tube works out to about $6.55 an ounce. Badger’s FAQ says an adult body needs about 1 oz, so a 2.9 fl oz tube is about three full-body applications.
- It contains beeswax, so it is not vegan. The FDA’s recall database lists a Class III recall of Badger’s Adventure Sport SPF 50 tin, begun in January 2025 and reported in February 2025 (since terminated), for a possibly missing Drug Facts panel. This tube is not named in it.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide instead of chemical filters. Our guides to choosing a safe sunscreen and chemical versus mineral filters explain the case. This Badger cream is zinc oxide at 22.5% in organic sunflower oil and beeswax, with vitamin E. That is the whole formula.
We could check more here than for most sunscreens. The FDA lists the product as an over-the-counter drug, and its label carries the same ingredients, an SPF 40 claim and an 80-minute water-resistance statement. What we could not check is the SPF itself: Badger does not name the lab that tested it, and we found no EWG Verified or MADE SAFE listing. That is why it scores a 3.
It is a thick cream. Rub it in, expect a pale cast, and reapply at least every two hours and after swimming or sweating, as the label says. For other body care with short ingredient lists, see hidden chemicals in personal care products.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
- Tested by
- FDA drug listing (DailyMed) and the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory page (brand-level)
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Every ingredient listed Verified | Badger’s page and the FDA label both list non-nano uncoated zinc oxide 22.5% (active), organic sunflower seed oil, organic beeswax and tocopherol. |
| Independent screening: EWG Verified or MADE SAFE Not verified | None found. Badger’s page does not claim either, MADE SAFE’s index does not list Badger, and EWG’s Verified directory has no Badger listing (searched on 2026-10-22). The FDA label image shows an “NSF Certified” mark; NSF’s listing site would not open for us, so we could not check what it covers. |
| Fragrance-free Maker’s claim | Labeled “Unscented & Hypoallergenic”. The ingredient list shows no fragrance or essential oil. |
| FDA drug listing Verified | Listed as a sunscreen: NDC 62206-4031-1, W.S. Badger Company, zinc oxide 22.5 g per 100 mL, 87 mL tube, listing current through 2026-12-31. |
| Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, water resistance stated Maker’s claim | The FDA label says Broad Spectrum SPF 40 and Water Resistant 80 min. We found no SPF test report and no lab name. |
| Short formula Verified | Four ingredients including the active. |
| Reef claim (Protect Land + Sea) Maker’s claim | Badger says this formula is certified. Haereticus’ page lists “Badger Body Care” as certified, with test data from 2019, and does not name this product. Haereticus says certifications last two years, and we found no current certificate. |
| Recall history Verified | The FDA’s enforcement database lists 2013 recalls of Badger baby and kids lotions (microbial contamination, Class II) and a Class III recall of the Adventure Sport SPF 50 tin begun on January 17, 2025 and reported on February 5, 2025 (possibly missing Drug Facts label). All are terminated. None names this product. |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
