Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • MADE SAFE’s index lists “Lotion Bar” as certified in all sizes and in five scents, including “Free + Clear (Unscented)”.
    • Five ingredients, listed on the page for the Free & Clear bar: organic shea butter, organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, candelilla wax and elderberry fruit extract.
    • No essential oil or fragrance. Kosmatology recommends the Free & Clear bar for sensitive or eczema-prone skin, and says the scented bars use essential oils that can irritate some skin.
    • The bar has no water, which Kosmatology says reduces the need for preservatives. None is listed.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • About $4.53 an ounce, and a 2.65 oz bar is best for hands and small areas rather than the whole body.
    • Two of the three oils are coconut and olive. Our petroleum jelly guide cites a study in which olive oil weakened the skin barrier in adult volunteers, and prefers sunflower or virgin coconut oil.
    • The ingredient list and the “fragrance-free” claim are Kosmatology’s. MADE SAFE’s entry does not reproduce the ingredient list.
    • Kosmatology says its products have an EWG Skin Deep rating of 1 to 2. That is EWG’s database score, not EWG Verified, and we could not confirm it.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Our guide to hidden chemicals in personal care products says to pick fragrance-free products with recognizable ingredients, and to start with leave-on products such as moisturizers. This bar fits: five ingredients, all of them oils, butters, wax or a plant extract, with no water and no scent.

What sets it apart is the outside check. MADE SAFE’s own index lists the lotion bar and names the unscented version, so we could confirm the certification in the certifier’s listing rather than take the maker’s word. Kosmatology was started by a compounding pharmacist, according to its About page.

Our eczema guide says the best moisturizer is the one you will use every day. A solid bar suits hands and small areas; for a whole body, the cream in the alternatives below covers more skin for less money.
