Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • Ten ingredients, all named on the page: organic coconut oil, organic palm oil, sodium hydroxide (none remains after the oils are made into soap), water, organic olive oil, organic hemp seed oil, organic jojoba oil, sea salt, citric acid and tocopherol.
    • No added fragrance or essential oils. The page says “Free from added fragrance” and lists none, so this is fragrance-free rather than just unscented.
    • EWG’s Verified directory lists “Dr. Bronner’s All One Hemp Pure Castile Soap, Baby Unscented” with the same ten ingredients as this bar. EWG’s entry does not say “bar,” but its list has sodium hydroxide and sea salt, which the liquid soap’s list lacks (the liquid uses potassium hydroxide). Dr. Bronner’s also says the oils are Regenerative Organic Certified and fair trade; we did not open those listings.
    • About $1.04 an ounce on the maker’s site.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • It is a true soap, made with lye. Neither the page nor the label states a pH. Soap is typically more alkaline than the roughly pH 5.5 our skin microbiome guide suggests for cleansers. If your skin is dry or eczema-prone, a syndet bar or a liquid cleanser may suit better.
    • Palm oil is one of the oils. Dr. Bronner’s labels it as certified organic and fair trade. We did not check those certifiers.
    • The page says to keep it out of eyes and to flush with water for 15 minutes if it gets in. It is not a tear-free baby soap.
    • Soap can leave a film in hard water.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Our guide to shampoo and body care says a simple bar or castile soap is often the cleanest option, and our fragrance guide explains why we look for no fragrance at all, not just “unscented”. This bar fits both: oils, water, salt and two small additives, with no fragrance or essential oil.

EWG’s Verified directory lists a “Baby Unscented” Dr. Bronner’s soap with the same ten ingredients, which we read as this bar (EWG’s entry does not say “bar”). The organic and fair-trade marks on the page are the maker’s claims; we did not open those certifiers’ listings.

The caution is the soap itself. It is made with lye, and the maker does not give a pH. Our skin microbiome guide suggests cleansers near pH 5.5, and soap is typically more alkaline than that. If you have dry or eczema-prone skin, try one of the alternatives below.
