Bambu Kitchen Basics Bamboo Cooking Utensils, set of 3
Reader ratings
Three cooking utensils, each cut from a single piece of bamboo, so there is no glue to ask about. The finish is hand-burnished; the food-safety claims are the maker’s own and no lab report is shown.
Best for Cooks replacing black nylon or silicone-coated utensils who want plain bamboo with no glue or coating.

How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- There is no glue. Bambu says each utensil is “crafted from a single piece of FSC®-certified 100% bamboo”. Bamboo boards, and some utensils, are laminated from strips, and our category standard asks every bamboo item to say what glue it uses. A single piece removes the question.
- The finish is stated: “hand-burnished to a naturally smooth finish”. The page lists no lacquer, paint or coating.
- Plastic is out of the picture. Black nylon spatulas are the problem in our cutting-board guide, where black nylon released primary aromatic amines in lab tests and some black plastic carried flame retardants. Bamboo is neither nylon nor recycled black plastic.
- The set is $22.95 for three utensils of about 12 inches.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- “Won’t leach chemicals into your food” is the maker’s claim. Bambu says its products pass independent laboratory testing, but it names no lab and links no report.
- The FSC® label (license code N004066 on the page) is not checked. We could not open FSC’s public certificate search.
- The product page has no care instructions. Bambu’s Testing & Materials page recommends its own finishing oil rather than mineral oil.
- Made in China. The Proudly Made page describes wild moso bamboo from eastern China and small family-operated workshops near Shanghai.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Utensils touch hot food directly, which is why the material matters. Our cutting-board guide reports that black nylon utensils released suspected carcinogens into acidic food simulants and that black plastic made from recycled electronics can carry flame retardants. Solid bamboo avoids both, as long as it is not glued up from strips with an unknown adhesive.
Bambu’s Kitchen Basics set is built to avoid that second problem: each piece is a single length of bamboo, shaped and burnished by hand, with no glue and no coating listed. There is little else in it to question.
The caveat is evidence. Bambu says its products pass independent lab tests, but shows none, and we could not confirm its FSC label. Treat the “won’t leach” line as the maker’s claim, not as a test result.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Named materials and glue Maker’s claim | 100% bamboo, each utensil from a single piece. No glue is used, according to the maker. |
| Finish or coating stated Maker’s claim | “Hand-burnished to a naturally smooth finish”. No coating is listed. |
| No antimicrobial treatments Maker’s claim | The page lists only bamboo and a burnished finish; no antimicrobial is mentioned. |
| Plastic-free where it wears Maker’s claim | Bamboo only; Bambu calls the set “a plastic-free essential”. |
| Safe by design Maker’s claim | No metal parts, bristles or coatings. |
| Independent testing Not verified | Bambu’s site says products pass independent laboratory testing for food safety, with no lab named and no report published. |
| Easy to clean or replace Not verified | No care instructions on the product page. |
| Recalls Verified | We searched the CPSC recall database for “Bambu” on 2026-10-22. It returned one recall, of Bambu Lab 3D printers, a different company. None for bambu® kitchenware. |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
