Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets, Fragrance-Free

A plastic-free dishwasher tablet listed by EPA Safer Choice, EWG Verified, USDA BioPreferred and Cradle to Cradle. Blueland reformulated it after EWG’s 2023 review, so we are asking whether the EPA and EWG marks cover today’s tablet.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • EPA’s Safer Choice table lists “Automatic Dish Washer Tablet Free & Clear” from Blueland, partner since 2020, with the fragrance-free flag set to true. We read it on 2026-10-22.
    • EWG’s directory lists “Blueland Dishwasher Detergent, Fragrance-free” as EWG Verified, with ingredient disclosure rated good. Its data was last updated March 8, 2023.
    • Two more registries list Blueland’s dishwasher tablets: Cradle to Cradle’s (Material Health Gold, version 5.0, certificate 12224, valid to May 7, 2028) and the USDA BioPreferred catalog (Certified Biobased label). Cradle to Cradle’s description reads “formulated with enzymes and oxi action”, the words Blueland uses for the new formula.
    • The current label has 10 ingredients on the product page, eight with CAS numbers and two enzyme blends marked proprietary. The tablets have no film wrapper: the page says “100% plastic-free”.
    • Blueland publishes its prices: $21 for 60 tablets, $42 for 120 and $75.60 for 240, with 20% off on autoship.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • The formula changed. Blueland’s page calls it “NEW and improved” with “oxi stain-fighting action”, and it now lists sodium percarbonate and sodium polyaspartate (marked synthetic). EWG’s 2023 list has neither, and has citric acid and an alkyl polyglucoside that today’s label lacks.
    • EPA’s table still shows an older name (“Free & Clear”) and a “Cucumber Basil” scent that Blueland’s page no longer sells. Its records carry no formula version, so we cannot tell whether the listing covers today’s tablets.
    • At $21 for 60 it is about 35 cents a tablet, or 28 cents on autoship. You also need the $10 tin, or a starter set.
    • Blueland’s certifications page names no certificate numbers or listing links for its marks. The Cradle to Cradle number above comes from that organization’s own registry.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Blueland’s dishwasher tablets are pressed powder with no dissolving film around them, and the label lists every ingredient. Our guide to common cleaning products points to those two things, a full label and no fragrance, as the starting point.

EPA’s Safer Choice table, EWG’s directory, Cradle to Cradle’s registry and the USDA’s BioPreferred catalog all list a Blueland dishwasher tablet. The catch is the date. Blueland reformulated the tablets, and EWG’s ingredient list is from 2023. Cradle to Cradle’s entry describes enzymes and oxi action, which matches the new tablet, but we cannot tell from EPA’s or EWG’s records whether those two marks cover what is in the pouch today.

We are asking Blueland to confirm that. Until we hear back, treat the EPA and EWG marks on this page as partly the maker’s claim.

How Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets, Fragrance-Free measures up against our cleaning & laundry criteria
What we checked What we found
Full ingredient disclosure Maker’s claim Ten ingredients on the product page for the Fragrance-Free tablet: sodium citrate, sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, a protease blend, microcrystalline cellulose, sorbitan caprylate, hydrated silica, water, sodium carboxymethyl inulin with sodium polyaspartate, and an amylase blend. Eight have CAS numbers; the two enzyme blends are marked proprietary.
Independent mark: EPA Safer Choice Maker’s claim Blueland says the current tablets are EPA Safer Choice. EPA’s table has “Automatic Dish Washer Tablet Free & Clear” (fragrance-free) under Blueland, but its records show no formula version, so we cannot tell if it covers the 2026 reformulation.
Independent mark: EWG Verified Not verified EWG lists “Blueland Dishwasher Detergent, Fragrance-free” as Verified, but its ingredient list (March 2023) differs from today’s label.
Other independent records Verified Cradle to Cradle’s registry lists Blueland “Dishwasher Tablets”: Material Health Gold, version 5.0, certificate 12224, valid until May 7, 2028. The USDA BioPreferred catalog lists “Blueland Dishwasher Tablets” with the Certified Biobased label. Neither record shows a formula version. Cradle to Cradle scores ingredient chemistry, not cleaning or safety.
Fragrance-free Maker’s claim The Fragrance-Free tablet lists no fragrance. The Lemon Zest tablet lists “Fragrance (Lemon Zest)” and names only citral and d-limonene.
Concentrates and refills Maker’s claim Compressed tablets in compostable paper refill pouches, with a reusable tin. The tablets have no film wrapper, according to the maker.
Honest germ claims Maker’s claim No germ-killing claim on the page.
    What the labels mean
    • Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
    • Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
    • Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
