How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- Glass where the coffee is. Chemex’s product page calls the coffeemakers “high quality and durable borosilicate glass, the same type used for labware” that “won’t impart any chemicals or flavors”.
- The filter is named. Chemex’s materials page says the paper is virgin pine pulp, the white paper is “oxygen cleansed using a bleach-free process”, and its pulp suppliers are FSC certified. Unbleached “Natural” filters are sold too; both kinds are $11 for 100.
- There is no water path to hide: no boiler, tubing, gasket or electronics. Hot water from your own kettle touches glass and paper only.
- Parts are sold. Chemex lists spare wood collars and rawhide ties, and the glass is dishwasher safe once the collar and tie are removed.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- No test report is published. Chemex says it has “periodic testing done” on its products but names no lab and shows no results.
- Glass breaks, and Chemex says it does not warranty against “traumatic breakage”.
- The collar and tie are not part of the brew path, but the page does not say what finish or leather treatment is used.
- It brews one batch at a time and needs a separate kettle, ideally stainless steel or glass.
What to know Details worth knowing first
The Chemex is a glass carafe with the filter cone built into its neck. Hot water goes through a heavy paper filter and into the glass, so the only things it touches are the paper and the glass itself. There is no heater, tubing or seal to ask about.
Our coffee page recommends paper-filtered coffee because the filter removes the diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol) that raise LDL cholesterol. Chemex says its heavy filters remove fats and sediment that other filters leave behind; we did not find a test of how much cafestol they hold back. It also says its white paper is “oxygen cleansed using a bleach-free process”. If you would rather skip bleaching altogether, buy the Natural filters.
What we cannot show you is a lab report. Chemex describes its glass and paper, and says it tests periodically, but publishes no results. Use a stainless steel or glass kettle with it, since heating water in plastic is the habit this setup is meant to replace.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Inert materials in the hot path Maker’s claim | Borosilicate glass carafe with the funnel built in. Hot water touches glass and paper only. Stated by Chemex. |
| Lead-free brass Maker’s claim | Not applicable: no brass or other metal parts on the product page (glass, wood collar, leather tie). |
| No non-stick coatings Maker’s claim | None described: glass, wood, leather and paper. |
| Filters you can name Maker’s claim | Chemex Bonded filters: virgin pine pulp; white paper “oxygen cleansed using a bleach-free process”; FSC-certified pulp suppliers (all stated by Chemex). A Natural (unbleached) version is sold as item FSU-100. |
| Built to last Maker’s claim | Dishwasher safe with the collar and rawhide removed; spare collars and ties sold. No coverage for breakage. |
| Independent testing Not verified | Chemex says “periodic testing” is done. No lab or report is named. |
| California Prop 65 notices Verified | No notice naming Chemex Coffeemakers in the California Attorney General’s 60-day notice database (searched 2026-10-22; the search matches on name fragments, and the hits were unrelated companies). |
| Recalls Verified | No Chemex coffeemaker recall in the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database (title search, 2026-10-22). |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.

Alternatives Other options to compare
- Hario V60 ceramic dripper Porcelain instead of glass, about $20 less, and the glaze is untested in anything we found.
- Frieling stainless steel French press Steel and no filter paper, but unfiltered coffee keeps the diterpenes that paper removes. About $115 and up.
