How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- CARB lists the Mighty2 (AP-1512N) as Mechanical (notified 2026-03-06, orders G-26-042, G-26-043 and G-26-044). By CARB’s definition that means filtration only, with no ozone or ions.
- Coway’s filter list has a washable pre-filter and one combined activated carbon and HEPA filter, and no ion device. The older Mighty (AP-1512HH) lists a “bipolar device” and CARB lists it as Electronic.
- Coway publishes a CADR: smoke 240, dust 242, pollen 249. Our two-thirds rule turns the smoke figure into about 360 sq ft.
- Coway’s Amazon listing says the filter meets the IEST-RP-CC007 standard for HEPA and captures 99.97% of 0.3 µm particles. It names no lab.
- Running cost is simple: one Max2 filter set a year at $69.99, plus a pre-filter you wash. Coway rates it at 19 to 50 dB and 56 W.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- The CADR is Coway’s. AHAM’s directory lists 59 brands, including Levoit, Medify and Oransi, but no Coway (searched 2026-10-22), so we could not check it.
- Coway’s headline room size, 1,800 sq ft in an hour, counts one air change an hour. By the CADR it is a room of about 360 sq ft.
- It is new: CARB listed it in March 2026. Coway does not say how much carbon the filter holds.
- Older Mighty models have an ionizer. The AP-1512HH manual says a button turns it on or off, but CARB lists it as Electronic, so we did not list it. Check that you are buying the Mighty2, or the AP-1512HHC, whose filter list has no ion device.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Coway’s Mighty has been a standard recommendation for years, and the Mighty2 replaces it. The change that matters to us is what is gone: the old model had a bipolar ion device, which CARB files as an electronic cleaner. The Mighty2 lists only a washable pre-filter and one carbon and HEPA filter, and CARB files it as mechanical. That is the filter-only design our air purifier guide points to.
Coway does publish a CADR, which is more than some premium makers do. We could not verify it, because AHAM’s directory has no Coway entry. Use the smoke figure, 240, to size the room: about 360 sq ft by our rule, not the 1,800 sq ft Coway quotes for one air change an hour.
It is a sound mid-priced choice, with a short, cheap filter routine. Its main gaps are a HEPA test we cannot open and a room rating we cannot check. See indoor pollutants for what a particle filter will not remove.
