How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- The materials are named. The maker’s page lists “beech, tampico fibre”, a plant fiber from agave, and describes a stiffer brush for coarser cleaning that does not scratch dishes. It names no plastic or wire.
- The head is replaceable. The maker sells an Everyday Refill (beech and tampico) for 55 SEK, against 70 SEK for the whole brush, so you keep the handle.
- Care is written down: shake out the water and hang the brush up, clean it by dipping it in hot water with mild detergent, and oil the wood occasionally, according to the maker’s dish-brush page.
- US shoppers can buy it. June Home Supply sold it for $8.00 and showed a replacement head for $7.00 on the day we looked.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- The page does not say how the fibers are fixed to the head or whether the beech has a finish. Nothing is said about antimicrobial treatments either.
- The maker’s own shop delivers within Sweden only. June Home Supply’s replacement-head listing describes horsehair bristles, while Iris Hantverk’s Everyday Refill is tampico. Check the bristle type of the head you buy.
- Tampico is stiff. The maker sells softer horsehair brushes for glasses and porcelain, and horsehair is animal-derived.
- No independent test is published. This model is machine made, according to its page, not hand made by the maker’s visually impaired craftspeople as many of its other brushes are.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Many dish brushes have plastic bristles, so the part that scrubs is the part that wears off as plastic. This one uses tampico, a stiff fiber from the agave plant, set in a beech-wood head, and the head comes off so that the handle outlasts the bristles. Our microplastics guide explains why we prefer that.
The maker is a Stockholm company that works with visually impaired craftspeople. This particular brush is described as machine made, so we do not credit it with the hand-made story. It is the plain, stiff option for pots and pans; for glasses, the maker sells softer horsehair brushes.
What we could not check: the finish on the wood, how the fibers are fixed, and any test of the materials. If you are in the EU, Redecker makes a similar brush with the finish stated.
