Why we chose it What put it on our list
- AHAM’s directory lists the MD02 (Mod+) at smoke CADR 363, dust 376, PM2.5 369 and pollen 373, for a 563 sq ft room. Our two-thirds rule gives about 540 sq ft.
- CARB lists the model as Mechanical (notified 2023-04-19, order G-23-108). By CARB’s definition that means filtration only, with no ozone or ions.
- Oransi says an independent accredited lab tested the assembled filter at full airflow to the IEST-RP-CC007 HEPA method and it captured 99.97% of particles from 0.1 to 0.3 µm. It names no lab.
- One filter holds a pre-filter, HEPA media, activated carbon and potassium permanganate. Oransi reports 76% formaldehyde removal in a one-hour test, with no report to open.
- Cost and noise are published: filter $79.60, rated 12 months; 20 to 56 dBA; 12 fan speeds from 92 to 375 CFM; a 3-year warranty.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- It costs about $699 against about $260 for the Levoit Eleva 500X, for a smoke CADR of 363 against 301. That is about $1.93 per CFM against $0.86.
- The Mod+ is assembled in China. Oransi’s AirMend and TrueCarbon lines are assembled in Virginia.
- Carbon and HEPA are one filter, so both are replaced together each year. Oransi does not say how much carbon it holds.
- Oransi puts a California Prop 65 warning on every product. Its FAQ cites lead and cadmium in circuit-board solder and says the warning does not mean a product is unsafe.
What to know Details worth knowing first
The Mod+ is Oransi’s biggest purifier: a single tall filter that combines a pre-filter, pleated HEPA media and a carbon blend, behind a quiet fan. It has nothing electronic in the airstream, which is what our air purifier guide wants, and CARB’s list confirms it.
Its strength is documentation. The AHAM listing gives a smoke CADR of 363, enough for a room of about 540 sq ft, and Oransi states its filter test method, reports a formaldehyde result and offers a three-year warranty. What it does not give is the name of the lab, so the 99.97% figure stays a maker claim here.
You pay for all that. At about $699 it costs roughly twice as much per unit of clean air as the Levoit Eleva 500X, and it is assembled in China. For most rooms the cheaper models do the same job. Choose the Mod+ for a very large room, or if you want the carbon and the paperwork in one box. Alternatives Other options to compare
- Levoit Eleva 500X About $260, AHAM smoke CADR 301 (about 450 sq ft) and a CARB mechanical listing. It is new: Amazon lists it as first available on 2026-10-18.
- Oransi AirMend 270HB About $250, assembled in the US, AHAM smoke CADR 237. It has HEPA media only, with no carbon. Oransi’s page says the media matches the Mod’s, whose finished filter it says tested at 99.97%; it gives no test for the AirMend filter itself.
- Oransi TrueCarbon 200C About $360, with 3.2 lb of carbon and no HEPA filter. Oransi reports Intertek gas tests for it. A companion for odors and VOCs, not a particle filter.
