How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- IAPMO R&T’s public listing covers the PPT711W with the PPF951K filter under NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 (files W-29903 to W-29905, active, effective 2025-11-13). The 53 claims include lead, mercury, cadmium, copper and “Total PFAS”; the 401 claims include microplastics.
- WQA, a second certifier, lists the PPT711W for NSF/ANSI 53 with lead and for 401 with microplastics, so those two claims do not rest on one record.
- PUR’s data sheet reports lead reduced 99.2% (pH 8.5) and 99.9% (pH 6.5) from a 150 µg/L challenge, and total PFAS reduced 99.75% from a 2.16 µg/L challenge.
- The data sheet names the PFAS test mix: PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, PFHpA, PFBS and PFDA.
- Running cost is low for a certified filter: Amazon listed a genuine PUR PLUS 3-pack at $27.54 (sold by Amazon.com), about $9.20 a filter, which is roughly $0.23 a gallon at the 40-gallon rating.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- The filter is rated for 40 gallons or about 2 months, so you change it six times a year. PUR’s own page says so.
- Only the PUR PLUS (“lead reducing”) filter carries these claims. PUR’s basic filter (PPF900Z) fits the same pitchers and is marked “Not Certified” for lead, total PFAS and microplastics on the data sheet.
- It does not reduce fluoride, nitrate or dissolved minerals, and PUR says it does not filter microbes.
- The PFAS result comes from a short lab test with a seven-compound mix. Independent tests of pitcher filters vary and can fade as a filter ages (see our guide to choosing a filter), so change it on schedule.
- PUR shows no price, so the price here comes from an Amazon listing seen on 2026-10-22.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Most pitcher filters are certified for taste and a handful of metals. The PUR PLUS filter has a longer list: lead, total PFAS and microplastics are all named in IAPMO R&T’s public listing for this pitcher. Our guide to choosing a filter compares pitchers with other types, and avoiding PFAS covers the wider picture.
Buy the version with the “lead reducing” (PLUS) filter. PUR also sells a basic filter that fits the same pitcher and is not certified for lead, PFAS or microplastics. The PLUS filter is small, 40 gallons or about two months, so its cost per gallon is higher than Brita’s Elite filter.
PUR publishes no prices. The ones above come from Amazon listings seen on 2026-10-22, so check the current price. Before buying any filter, look at what’s in your water, and put the filter changes in your calendar.

| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Certified standards Verified | IAPMO R&T lists the pitcher family, including PPT711W and PPT711B with the PPF951K filter, under NSF/ANSI 42-2023 (W-29903), 53-2024 (W-29904) and 401-2023 (W-29905), all active. WQA lists the same models for 42, 53 and 401. |
| Lead, PFAS and fluoride Verified | IAPMO’s 53 listing for the PPF951K names lead and Total PFAS. The percentages come from PUR’s data sheet: lead 99.2 to 99.9%, total PFAS 99.75%. WQA’s entry shows lead but no PFAS. No fluoride claim. |
| Flow and waste Maker’s claim | No wastewater. PUR gives no pour time; its data sheet rates service flow at 2 gallons a day. |
| Replacement cost Maker’s claim | PPF951K is rated 40 gallons or about 2 months (PUR). Amazon listed a genuine 3-pack at $27.54 on 2026-10-22, about $9.20 a filter. |

What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
