How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- USDA’s Organic Integrity Database lists Purity Coffee Inc as certified through Pennsylvania Certified Organic (status effective 13 June 2024, profile updated 21 October 2026). Its scope names “Purity Coffee Flow Whole Bean”.
- Purity posts a certificate of analysis from Trilogy Analytical Laboratories for FLOW: sample “FLOW2026-2027”, received 5 October 2026, reported 7 October 2026, by LC-MS/MS. The report says the lab’s activities are validated to ISO 17025:2017.
- Ochratoxin A and all four aflatoxins came back below the lab’s reporting limit of 1 ppb. The EU limit for ochratoxin A in roasted coffee is 3 µg/kg, so a 1 ppb limit is tight enough to show a result under it.
- Fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, T-2 and HT-2 were also below reporting limits. The sister blends (EASE, CALM, PROTECT, BALANCE) and the Espresso each have their own posted report.
- Purity says each bag is flushed with nitrogen on the roast day, and prints a best-by date set 12 months after roasting.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- It costs about $2.42 an ounce. Fresh Roasted Coffee’s organic Peru is about $1.33 an ounce, and Counter Culture’s Apollo about $1.67.
- The posted report covers mold toxins only. Purity says it also tests for pesticides and heavy metals, but we found those results only for its Espresso, as a summary that does not name the lab. Ask Purity for FLOW’s full report.
- The report gives a sample ID, not a lot number, and does not say whether green or roasted beans were tested.
- The bag shows a best-by date, not a roast date. Subtract 12 months, as Purity’s help center explains.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Ochratoxin A is the mold toxin people usually mean when they ask about mold in coffee. Our guide to mold toxins in food explains that it turns up in roasted coffee worldwide, at levels that vary with origin and processing, and that washed coffees generally carry less than natural-process ones. Purity says FLOW is a blend of washed coffees.
What sets Purity apart is the paperwork. Its product pages link to a lab report for each blend. FLOW’s comes from Trilogy Analytical Laboratories, names its methods and reporting limits, and found nothing at or above them for ochratoxin A or the aflatoxins. USDA’s organic database separately lists the company, and this blend, as certified.
Two limits matter. The report covers mold toxins only, and it describes one sample. Treat it as a good sign, not a guarantee about every bag. For average drinkers in most countries, ochratoxin A intake from coffee stays below the tolerable daily intake, as our mold-toxin guide reports, so if the price is a stretch, a cheaper organic coffee with a roast date is a sound choice. | Published lab tests Verified | Trilogy Analytical Laboratories certificate S10052026-54229 for FLOW, reported 7 October 2026. Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 and ochratoxin A are below 1 ppb; the other mold toxins are below their limits. Mold toxins only. |
| Organic or residue-tested Verified | Listed in the Organic Integrity Database as USDA Organic: Purity Coffee Inc, with “Purity Coffee Flow Whole Bean”, NOP ID 8210009205, certified by Pennsylvania Certified Organic. |
| A roast date Maker’s claim | No roast date is printed. The best-by date is 12 months after roasting, so subtract a year (Purity help center). |
| Pesticide and heavy-metal results Not verified | Purity says it tests for both. No results are posted for FLOW. |
| Hot coffee kept off plastic Maker’s claim | Sold as whole beans, so nothing hot touches the packaging. Purity also sells Keurig-style pods and plant-based sachets, which we did not review. |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
