Ratio Eight Series 2 Coffee Maker

An automatic drip brewer whose maker lists the brew path as stainless steel, borosilicate glass and aluminum, with a stainless basket and no plastic touching hot water or coffee. The aluminum heater is the catch, and it costs $699.

Best for People who want a one-button drip brewer and will pay for a published, mostly plastic-free brew path.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • The maker names the path. Ratio’s FAQ says water meets “a stainless steel, aluminum, and glass brew path once brewing begins”, with borosilicate glass water lines and a stainless steel showerhead.
    • Coffee drips into a double-wall stainless steel basket that Ratio says is “crafted without plastic”, then into a handblown borosilicate glass carafe or a double-wall stainless thermal carafe.
    • Ratio says glass and steel keep plastic out of contact with hot water and brewed coffee. The plastic it names is the cold-water tank (Tritan) and a polymer body shell around a stainless steel structure.
    • It is repairable. Ratio gives a 5-year warranty and sells parts, including the stainless dripper and catcher set ($55), a silicone heat lid ($8) and carafe handle gaskets ($3).
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • Aluminum is in the brew path. Ratio’s Eight FAQ lists it, and its Ratio Six page says a die-cast aluminum heating element heats the water. We found no test of aluminum release from this heater.
    • Every claim is Ratio’s own, and the Eight page does not name the tubing, seal or thermal-carafe lid materials. The Ratio Six page names “FDA-approved silicone” in its water path.
    • It costs $699, more than 20 times a ceramic dripper, and it does the job a dripper and a kettle already do.
    • The cheaper Ratio Six ($379) has a filter basket lined with a polymer unless you add the plastic-free basket.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Automatic drip brewers usually put a plastic brew basket in near-boiling water, which is one of the red flags for coffee gear. The Ratio Eight is one of the few whose maker says otherwise and lists what the water touches: stainless steel, borosilicate glass and aluminum. The basket is steel and the carafe is glass or steel, so the coffee never meets plastic. That is why it is here.

The aluminum is the honest weak spot. Ratio’s Six page says a die-cast aluminum heating element warms the water, and the Eight lists aluminum in its brew path too. It heats water from the tank rather than holding hot, acidic coffee, but we found no measurement of what it picks up. Our page on aluminum exposure explains where everyday aluminum comes from and that leaching rises with acid, long cooking times and scratched surfaces.

At $699 this is a luxury choice. A Chemex at about $50 and a $70 stainless steel stovetop kettle cost under a fifth as much and give you a hot path of glass, paper and steel with no heater to ask about. Choose the Ratio if you want the drip routine and are willing to rely on the maker’s description.
