How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- Rocket states the boilers. Its Bicocca page describes “independent stainless steel boilers for brewing and steam”, and the spec table reads “Double stainless steel boiler: Yes”.
- A retailer lists more of the hot path as stainless steel. Whole Latte Love’s spec table gives the brew group and steam wand as stainless steel. Rocket’s cheaper models list a chrome-plated brass E61 group in the same table.
- It is built to be serviced. Rocket’s brochure calls it a “modular servicing architecture”, the pump is a plumbable rotary pump, and Rocket’s online shop sells group gaskets, shower foils, baskets and portafilters.
- No Prop 65 notice and no recall naming Rocket Espresso turned up in our searches on 2026-10-22.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- Rocket does not describe the tubing, pump body, valves, seals or the tank (plastic, per Whole Latte Love), and does not say whether any brass is lead-free. The portafilter is chrome-plated brass per the retailer.
- Rocket’s warranty statement is 2 years (1 year in the USA and Asia) and says the warranty sits with the authorised dealer. The 3-year cover is the stores’ own.
- At about $5,790 it costs far more than the Rocket Appartamento TCA, which Rocket’s catalog describes with a copper boiler (about $2,050 to $2,350).
- Portafilter machines released the most metal of the three machine types in a German test, especially after descaling (PMID 26436214; machines not named). The test does not tell us about the Bicocca.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Rocket makes several home espresso machines, and the honest answer is that it depends on the model. Rocket’s catalog describes stainless steel dual boilers on the Bicocca, the R NINE ONE and the Epica, and a copper heat-exchange boiler on the Appartamento TCA. Our criteria prefer stainless boilers, so the Bicocca is the Rocket that fits them best.
Beyond the boilers, Rocket says very little. It does not describe the tubing, pump or tank, and it does not say its brass is lead-free; a retailer lists the portafilter as chrome-plated brass. Parts lists for the older R58 and R NINE ONE, as copied by Whole Latte Love, name silicone pipe and PTFE (“Teflon”) gaskets rather than PTFE tubing, but no list exists for the Bicocca. Our guides to lead in cookware and food and PTFE and PFAS explain why we ask about brass and fluoropolymer parts.
We found no report of a problem with Rocket machines and no test showing they are free of one. The one German test of coffee machines found metal release highest right after descaling, and its authors recommend careful rinsing after descaling. That applies to any portafilter machine. We are asking Rocket which parts touch brew water and whether its brass is lead-free, and we will update this page with its answer.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Inert materials in the hot path Maker’s claim | Stainless steel brew and steam boilers, stated by Rocket. Whole Latte Love lists the brew group and steam wand as stainless steel, the portafilter as chrome-plated brass and the tank as plastic. Tubing, pump and valves are not described. Parts lists for Rocket’s older R58 and R NINE ONE name no aluminum part. |
| Lead-free brass Not verified | Not stated. The portafilter is chrome-plated brass per Whole Latte Love, with no lead-free statement, and we found no metal-release test. |
| No PTFE or PFA in the water path Not verified | Not stated. Rocket does not describe its tubing or seals, and no parts list exists for the Bicocca. Parts lists for its older R58 and R NINE ONE, as copied by Whole Latte Love, name silicone pipe and PTFE (“Teflon”) gaskets, not PTFE tubing. |
| Filters you can name Not verified | Two commercial 58 mm portafilters are listed by the retailer; the basket material is not stated. |
| Built to last Maker’s claim | “Modular servicing architecture” (Rocket’s brochure). Rocket’s warranty is 2 years (1 year in the USA), held by the dealer; Whole Latte Love and Seattle Coffee Gear each list 3 years. Rocket’s online shop sells group gaskets, baskets and portafilters. |
| California Prop 65 notices Verified | No notice naming Rocket Espresso in the California Attorney General’s 60-day notice database (searched 2026-10-22; “Rocket” matches unrelated companies such as Rocket Fizz and Rocket 76). |
| Recalls Verified | No Rocket Espresso recall in the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database (title search, 2026-10-22). |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
