Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • IAOS, Nutrasource’s testing program for algae oils, lists it. We opened the report for lot S26E017 (expires 06/2028): DHA 817 mg a softgel against a 700 mg claim, TOTOX 9.00, mercury below 0.0123 ppm, lead below 0.0066 ppm and PCBs 0.162 ppb.
    • The label names the organism, Schizochytrium sp., and the softgel is plant-based: tapioca starch, vegetable glycerin and water, with mixed tocopherols.
    • Our sources and dosing guide says algae DHA performs like fish-oil DHA in trials and suggests at least 250 mg of DHA a day for people who do not eat fish.
    • At about $0.40 a softgel it works out to about $0.29 per 500 mg of DHA.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • It has DHA only. Our dosing guide suggests algae oil with EPA as well. Momentous Vegan Omega-3 has 500 mg each of EPA and DHA in two capsules and an NSF Certified for Sport listing, but it costs about $55 and its page said it would be back in stock “soon”.
    • One softgel is 700 mg of DHA, above the 250 to 500 mg a day of EPA plus DHA for general health. Check with a clinician if you take blood thinners or have atrial fibrillation (see omega-3 and heart health).
    • Sports Research’s own page lists $34.95 in a July 2026 archive copy (it was marked “not available” in a December 2025 copy). Its live site blocked our fetches with a security checkpoint, so we confirmed the current price only at Vitacost.
    • The maker says only that the algae are “cultivated in controlled environments”. Sports Research does not say where or how, and no sustainability certification applies to algae oil in the way it does to fish.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Fish accumulate EPA and DHA from algae, so algae oil gives the same fats without fish. Our guide to sources and dosing covers how algae oil compares with fish oil and why we suggest looking for EPA as well as DHA.

This Sports Research product is DHA only: 700 mg a softgel from Schizochytrium algae. What earns it a place here is the IAOS listing. IAOS is the algae counterpart of the IFOS fish oil program, and it publishes a report for each certified lot. The lot we opened was fresh and clean, and it tested above the label claim.

If you want EPA as well, the alternative below has both but costs more, and its page said it was out of stock when we looked. For a fish-based option, see the Sports Research fish oil.
