Mushroom supplements

Mushroom powders and extracts that say which part of the mushroom they use and measure what is in it.

What we look for
  • Fruiting body or mycelium, stated: the label says which part is used. Mycelium grown on grain can be mostly grain starch.
  • Measured actives: beta-glucan by a named method (such as Megazyme) with starch or alpha-glucan reported too; for mycelium sold for erinacine A, that compound plus a starch figure.
  • Tested for contaminants: heavy-metal and microbial results by lot, in a report naming the lab, date and sample, since mushrooms take up metals from what they grow on.
  • A named species and origin: the Latin name, where it was grown, and an organic certification.
  • Extract or powder, stated: the extraction (hot water, alcohol or both) and ratio, or plain dried powder.
  • “Full spectrum” or “mycelium on organic grain” labels that do not report starch.
  • Polysaccharide figures with no method named, which can count starch.
  • Several mushrooms under one blend total, with no amount for each.
  • Claims to treat cancer, anxiety, dementia or any other disease.
