How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- The GOTS database lists ESSENTIAL LAYER INC, Cottonique’s maker: license GOTS-28166, certification body IDFL, undergarments of 100% organic cotton in scope. Cottonique’s certificate PDF, issued 28 September 2026, runs to 4 November 2027.
- The page names the parts: 100% organic cotton single jersey, fiber-dyed, 150 gsm; OEKO-TEX colored cotton thread; latex-free and spandex-free elastic; a 100% woven cotton label.
- There is no elastane in the fabric. Cottonique says the garments are free from latex, spandex, synthetic fibers, harsh dyes, resins, bleach and formaldehyde.
- B Lab’s directory lists Essential Layer Inc as a Certified B Corporation, with an overall score of 112.0.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- The GOTS database shows license GOTS-28166 expiring on 4 November 2026. Cottonique’s certificate, issued 28 September 2026, says it is valid until 4 November 2027, but the database still showed the 2026 date when we looked on 22 October 2026, so we could not confirm the renewal there. Check the record again after 4 November.
- The elastic is called “latex-free” and “spandex-free”. The page does not say what it is made of.
- Cottonique’s FAQ says its older melange colorways were sewn with cotton-wrapped polyester core thread, which it is phasing out, and that the newer colorways, including the four sold here, use 100% cotton thread. Check the listing for the pair you buy.
- Opened underwear can be returned only for store credit or an exchange, and you pay the return shipping.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Cottonique says most underwear sold has latex or spandex in the elastic of the waistband and leg openings. Its briefs leave both out. The fabric is 100% organic cotton with no elastane, and the elastic is described as latex-free and spandex-free. Our microplastics guide recommends natural fibers over synthetic ones where practical, and this keeps the fabric to one natural fiber.
The certification is the other strength. The GOTS database lists Cottonique’s maker, Essential Layer Inc, and the maker’s own certificate, issued in September 2026, runs to November 2027. The database still shows the earlier expiry date, 4 November 2026, so we have flagged that rather than smoothing it over. The standard’s text prohibits PFAS and synthetic antimicrobial finishes; see avoiding PFAS.
What the page does not give is the elastic’s material, or the names of the dyes. Cottonique also sells undyed “natural” styles for people who want to avoid dyes altogether. Wash new underwear before wearing it, as our clothing chemicals guide advises.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
- Tested by
- GOTS database (IDFL Laboratory and Institute Inc.)
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Certified textiles Verified | The GOTS database lists ESSENTIAL LAYER INC (Philippines): license GOTS-28166, certification body IDFL Laboratory and Institute Inc., scope including undergarments of 100% organic cotton. The database shows expiry 2026-11-04. Cottonique’s own certificate PDF (issued 2026-09-28, GOTS version 7.0) shows 2027-11-04. |
| Natural fibers, synthetics stated Maker’s claim | 100% organic cotton single jersey, 150 gsm, no elastane. The elastic is “latex-free and spandex-free”; its material is not named. |
| No PFAS finishes Maker’s claim | Cottonique lists PFAS among the substances its GOTS certification excludes. GOTS’s standard text (version 8.1) prohibits PFAS. What we confirmed is the license, not this garment. |
| No antimicrobial finishes Not verified | Not mentioned on the page. GOTS (version 8.1 text) prohibits synthetic antimicrobial finishing inputs. |
| Dyes and trims named Maker’s claim | The fabric is fiber-dyed. Thread, label and elastic type are named on the page. Cottonique says its dyes are low-impact, GOTS-compliant and hypoallergenic; it names no dyes. It cites OEKO-TEX for the thread, with no certificate number, and we found no Cottonique or Essential Layer entry in OEKO-TEX’s Buying Guide. |
| B Corp (company) Verified | B Lab’s directory lists Essential Layer Inc as a Certified B Corporation, overall score 112.0. |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
