Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • EPA’s Safer Choice dataset lists “Bio Laundry Detergent Free & Clear” from Dirty Labs Inc., partner since 2020, with the fragrance-free flag set to true. We read it on 2026-10-22.
    • EWG’s own directory lists “Dirty Labs Bio Laundry Detergent with Phytolase, Free & Clear” as EWG Verified, and its brand filter shows this is the only EWG Verified cleaner from Dirty Labs.
    • The label is complete: 16 ingredients, each with a CAS number, and “No added fragrance”. The page also says it has no preservatives, dyes, optical brighteners or chlorine bleach.
    • It is a concentrate: one 8 ml dose per standard load from a reusable beaker, so the 32-load bottle holds 8.6 fl oz. An 80-load refill is sold at $28, about 35 cents a load.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • It costs more per load than the two alternatives below: 50 cents for the small bottle and about 35 cents for the refill, against about 20 cents for Seventh Generation’s EasyDose.
    • Enzymes do the cleaning: protease, amylase, cellulase, mannanase and pectate lyase are all listed. Meliora’s powder is a soap-and-soda formula with none.
    • Of the Dirty Labs detergents on EPA’s list, only Free & Clear and Hand Wash & Delicate carry the fragrance-free flag. The scented versions add “fragrances”, and the page names some of the components.
    • EWG’s listing was last updated in April 2021 and its ingredient list differs slightly from today’s page (no sodium hydroxide or propylene glycol). The “recognized by the National Eczema Association” line is the maker’s claim.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Much of the worry about laundry products comes from fragrance and what stays on fabric. Our guide to laundry products suggests fragrance-free detergent and a smaller dose. This is a fragrance-free liquid with a short, fully listed formula that you dose with a beaker.

It is on the list because two outside records agree. EPA’s Safer Choice data lists the Free & Clear detergent as fragrance-free, and EWG’s directory lists it as EWG Verified. Both are product-specific. Check the exact product you are buying: these records cover Dirty Labs’ laundry detergents, not every item the company sells.

Expect to pay for it. At 35 to 50 cents a load it costs well above the two alternatives below. It also relies on enzymes and sugar-based surfactants rather than soap. If your priority is the lowest cost per load, start with those.
