Reader ratings
Momentous Vitamin D3 2000 IU

A plain vitamin D3 capsule (2,000 IU) listed in NSF’s Certified for Sport database, with a maker-posted certificate for each listed lot. The certificates show more than the label dose, and it costs more than store-brand D3.

Best for People who want vitamin D3 on its own, with no K2 to worry about on blood thinners, and want to read the lab results for the batch they are taking.

Reviews are personal experiences, not research, and they never change our quality ratings. Every review is read by our team before it appears.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • NSF’s Certified for Sport database lists “Vitamin D3 2000IU” from Momentous: capsule, 60 count, one capsule a serving, with five lots shown (1000036935, 1000037719, 1000037700, 1000033030 and 10000031719).
    • Momentous publishes a certificate of analysis PDF for each lot, and the five NSF lots appear on its certificate page. We opened three (lots 37700, 36935 and 33030). In all three, arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury were at or below 0.0014 µg per capsule. The full certificate we read for lot 37700 also shows no Salmonella, E. coli or Staph. aureus.
    • The label has one active ingredient, vitamin D3 50 mcg (2,000 IU) as plant-based cholecalciferol, in organic extra virgin olive oil, with hypromellose and candelilla wax as the other ingredients. The oil means it does not have to be taken with a fatty meal, as Momentous says.
    • 2,000 IU is half the 4,000 IU upper limit for vitamin D, and in the range our supplementation guide describes for most adults.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • The capsules hold more than the label. The three certificates we opened (Momentous’s own) measured 2,584, 2,624 and 2,817 IU against 2,000 IU on the label, whose specification is “at least 50 µg”. That is still under the 4,000 IU upper limit, but count it if you also take a multivitamin or other vitamin D.
    • It costs about $20 for 60 capsules, roughly $0.33 a day. Store-brand D3 is much cheaper; the catch is that we could not open USP’s database to check those listings (see the alternatives).
    • It has no K2. For D3 and K2 in one capsule, see the alternatives below.
    • Our supplementation guide says vitamin D supplements mainly help people who are deficient. A 25(OH)D blood test shows whether you are, and the guide covers when to retest.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Vitamin D3 is the form most people supplement, and our supplementation guide explains the usual doses and why a blood test is worth having. This is a plain 2,000 IU capsule with nothing else active in it.

It is on this list because an outside record and the maker’s own paperwork back the label. NSF lists the product and its lots in its Certified for Sport database, and Momentous puts a certificate of analysis online for each lot (its own document, naming no lab). We read three of them. Heavy metals were at trace levels, and the vitamin D came out well above 2,000 IU every time. That is a point to know, not a reason to avoid it: the dose is still under the 4,000 IU limit.

It is not the cheapest D3. If price matters most, store-brand softgels cost a fraction, though we could not check their testing listings ourselves. For how seals and certificates work, see how to tell if a supplement is pure.

What we checked What we found
Third-party tested Verified Listed in NSF’s Certified for Sport database as “Vitamin D3 2000IU”, Momentous: capsule, 60 count, five lots, “vegan” product type. The listing shows no certification date or status.
A certificate of analysis Maker’s claim Momentous’s certificate page links a PDF per lot, including the five NSF-listed lots. We opened lots 37700, 36935 and 33030: heavy metals at or below 0.0014 µg per capsule, microbes within limits, and 2,584 to 2,817 IU of D3 per capsule against the 2,000 IU label. These are Momentous’s own documents, and none of the three names a lab.
The right form Maker’s claim Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), 50 mcg (2,000 IU) per capsule. Momentous says the D3 is plant-based; the certificates call it “vegan vitamin D3”.
A plain label Maker’s claim One active ingredient. No proprietary blend.
Disclosed extras Verified Organic extra virgin olive oil, hypromellose (capsule) and candelilla wax. Momentous calls it gluten-free, allergen-free and GMO-free; NSF’s listing shows a gluten-free and GMO-free claim.
Dose against the upper limit Maker’s claim Label 2,000 IU; Momentous’s certificates show 2,584 to 2,817 IU in three lots. The upper limit for adults is 4,000 IU a day.
    What the labels mean
    • Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
    • Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
    • Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
