Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • NSF’s Certified for Sport database lists Essential Grass Fed-Whey Protein, Unflavored (id 1518123; 590 g, one 23.6 g scoop, 20 g protein; the lot field reads “All”). Chocolate (id 1410573), vanilla (id 1410568) and newer whey isolate flavors are listed too.
    • Momentous posts a certificate of analysis for each lot; its COA page links more than 1,000 across its products. The unflavored lot we opened (0241H6, made Aug. 20, 2026) reports per 23.7 g scoop: lead under 0.050 µg, arsenic 0.030 µg, cadmium 0.005 µg and mercury under 0.020 µg, tested by Light Labs. A chocolate lot (0486F6, made July 29, 2026) was similar.
    • Consumer Reports tested an earlier Momentous whey isolate (vanilla, since discontinued) in 2025 and found 0.15 µg of lead per serving. Momentous told CR it has since overhauled its dairy and plant powders.
    • The unflavored label is two ingredients: grass-fed whey protein isolate (23.4 g) and ProHydrolase, a protease enzyme blend (200 mg), for 20 g of protein a scoop. Momentous says there are no gums, fillers or artificial sweeteners.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • It is the most expensive whey on our list: $69.99 for 25 servings, about $2.80 a serving or 14 cents per gram of protein. Subscribing takes 25% off.
    • The certificates are posted by Momentous, and they print “Report Only” where a limit would go. The NSF mark is an outside check, but NSF’s lead limit, 10 µg a day as Consumer Reports describes it, is far looser than CR’s 0.5 µg.
    • “Grass-fed” and “European dairy farms” are the maker’s words. No certifier, farm or country is named.
    • It adds an enzyme blend. Flavored versions add natural flavors with monk fruit and stevia, and strawberry uses Reb M, a stevia sweetener.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Momentous sells its isolate as a premium whey, and the price shows it: about $2.80 a serving. What you get for it is documentation. NSF lists the unflavored powder, and Momentous posts a certificate for every lot, so you can look up the number on your jar. Our whey protein guide covers what whey does, and how much protein you need covers how much.

We read two certificates, one for the unflavored powder (August 2026) and one for chocolate (July 2026). Both report lead under 0.050 µg a scoop, below Consumer Reports’ 0.5 µg daily level of concern. Consumer Reports also tested an earlier version of this isolate and found 0.15 µg.

The caveats are the usual ones. The certificates come from Momentous, not an outside body. NSF’s lead limit is looser than Consumer Reports’. And “grass-fed” rests on the maker’s word. Unflavored keeps the label to the whey and an enzyme blend. See how to tell if a supplement is pure for how these checks fit together.

How Momentous Whey Protein Isolate (Unflavored) measures up against our protein powders & shakes criteria
What we checked What we found
Third-party tested Verified NSF lists the unflavored powder (id 1518123, “Essential Grass Fed-Whey Protein”) with the lot field set to “All” and no certification date. The 590 g size and 23.6 g scoop match the 25-serving jar.
Heavy metals checked Maker’s claim Lot certificates from Momentous show lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury per scoop (two lots read, lead under 0.050 µg in both). Consumer Reports’ independent result, 0.15 µg of lead, was for the earlier, discontinued isolate.
A plain label Maker’s claim Unflavored: grass-fed whey protein isolate and ProHydrolase (200 mg). 20 g protein per scoop. No added amino acids listed.
Disclosed extras Maker’s claim Unflavored has the enzyme blend only. Chocolate and vanilla add natural flavors, salt, monk fruit extract and stevia; chocolate adds cocoa. Contains milk.
A clear source Maker’s claim Momentous says the whey is European, grass-fed and from hormone- and antibiotic-free cows. We saw no certifier or farm.
Prop 65 notices Verified None recent. The California Attorney General’s database shows two 2021 lead notices naming Momentous’ operator, Project One Nutrition, for “dietary supplements,” without naming a product.
    What the labels mean
    • Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
    • Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
    • Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
