Teakhaus Butcher Block Cutting Board 317, 12 x 12 in

A thick end-grain teak board whose maker names its glue (KOYOBOND, water-based) and its finish (mineral oil and beeswax). Those, and the FSC wood claim, are the maker’s own statements; no lab report is published.

Best for Cooks who want a solid wood board with the glue and finish spelled out, at a lower price than most end-grain boards.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • It names its glue. Teakhaus’s FAQ says boards are joined with KOYOBOND, a water-based polymer-isocyanate adhesive made in Japan that the maker says contains no formaldehyde or volatile organic compounds. John Boos’s maple R-Board page, by comparison, names no adhesive.
    • It names its finish: “a mix of mineral oil and beeswax”. The FAQ says the company uses no harmful chemicals or synthetic glazes to coat its boards, and the product page asks you to re-oil with mineral oil 2 to 3 times a month.
    • The wood is solid teak, which the maker says is FSC-certified. This board is 2 inches thick, 12 by 12 inches, and weighs 7 lb.
    • For scale on price, John Boos’s 1.5-inch maple R-Board starts at $94.95, in larger sizes (from 18 x 12 in). This board is about $54.
    • The maker offers a 1-year warranty on boards bought at teakhaus.com.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 5 points
    • The glue, the finish and the FSC status are all the maker’s statements. The page links no lab report for the adhesive or the finished board, and we could not search FSC’s public certificate database.
    • Care takes work: hand wash only, re-oil 2 to 3 times a month, and keep it out of the dishwasher, microwave and oven, according to the product page.
    • It is a compact, heavy block. The same maker’s larger end-grain board (24 x 18 x 1.5 in) is $195.
    • Lab studies disagree on whether wood or plastic boards stay cleaner, so wash and dry any board well. See our cutting-board guide.
    • The warranty does not cover boards bought on Amazon or from other stores, according to Teakhaus’s warranty policy.
What to know Details worth knowing first

A wooden board is made of many strips glued together, so the glue matters as much as the wood. Our cutting-board guide finds that lab studies disagree on wood versus plastic for bacteria, while plastic boards shed microplastics into food. That is the case for wood. Our formaldehyde guide is the reason to ask what is in the adhesive.

Teakhaus answers that on its FAQ page, which names the adhesive, KOYOBOND, says it has no formaldehyde or VOCs, and names the finish, a mix of mineral oil and beeswax. This board is its compact 12-inch end-grain size.

Everything above is the maker’s own statement. We found no lab report, and we could not open FSC’s certificate search to confirm the wood. If you buy it, buy from Teakhaus’s own site to keep the warranty.

Alternatives Other options to compare 3 options
    • Teakhaus Essential Cutting Board 405 The same maker’s thin, light edge-grain board (16 x 11 x 0.55 in) for about $34. The same glue and finish statements apply.
    • Bambu Classic Bamboo Cutting & Serving Board Bamboo rather than hardwood, with the glue type (water-based, formaldehyde-free) and finish (wood oil) stated but not named. About $31 to $44.
    • John Boos R-Board (maple) A maple board about 1.5 inches thick for about $95. The maker says the maple is NSF Certified, but its page does not name the glue, calls the finish only “oil”, and describes the board as both end grain and edge grain, so we do not list it.
