Viva Naturals Triple Strength Omega-3 Fish Oil
Reader ratings
A concentrated, triglyceride-form fish oil with an IFOS lot report (TOTOX 4.73) and a Labdoor test (96.7 of 100). Two softgels give about 2,070 mg of EPA plus DHA, far above the usual 250 to 500 mg.
Best for People who want a low-cost fish oil with two independent lot tests behind it, and who have a reason, ideally a clinician’s advice, to take a higher dose.

How we evaluated it
Why we chose it What put it on our list
- IFOS lists it, with lot reports. We opened the report for lot SG26050712 (expires 08/2028): TOTOX 4.73, mercury below 0.002 ppm, lead below 0.01 ppm and PCBs below 5 ppb.
- A second lab agrees. Labdoor tested lot UC250438 in May 2026 and found TOTOX 4.0, heavy metals below its limit of quantitation and more EPA and DHA than the label claims. It scored the product 96.7 out of 100.
- The label separates the fats: 1,500 mg EPA, 570 mg DHA and 50 mg DPA in two softgels. The IFOS lot tested at 1,573 mg EPA and 640 mg DHA, and IFOS notes the omega-3s are in triglyceride form.
- Viva says where the fish come from: anchovy from Peru and Chile, anchovy and mackerel from Chile, and sardine and mackerel from Morocco, in FAO catch zones 87 and 34.
- At the 60-count price it is about $0.40 a softgel, or about $0.19 per 500 mg of EPA plus DHA.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy
- The dose is high. Two softgels give about 2,070 mg of EPA plus DHA, against 250 to 500 mg a day in our sources and dosing guide and a 3,000 mg a day ceiling that the FDA treats as generally safe. Check with a clinician first if you take blood thinners or have atrial fibrillation (see omega-3 and heart health).
- Viva says the fish are “sustainably sourced” but names no sustainability certification, such as MSC or Friend of the Sea.
- Labdoor is a testing company that buys products at retail. It earns fees from Amazon links, which it discloses. We read one lot report from each lab, not every lot.
- The softgel is made with fish gelatin, so it is not for anyone avoiding fish. Viva is a Canadian company; the product is made in the USA.
What to know Details worth knowing first
Two things make a fish oil worth trusting: it should be fresh, and it should be free of contaminants. Viva Naturals’ Triple Strength oil is in the IFOS program and was also tested by Labdoor. Both labs published oxidation figures for the lots they tested, and both were far below the limits.
The oil is a concentrate in the triglyceride form. Two softgels carry about 2,070 mg of EPA plus DHA, which is a lot more than most people need for general health (see our guide to sources and dosing). The price per dose is low because each capsule holds so much.
Viva names its fish and where they are caught. What it does not name is a sustainability certifier, so that part rests on its word. For background, read about EPA and DHA.
Quality & testing How it measures up against our checklist
- Third-party tested
- Yes
- Tested by
- IFOS (Nutrasource) and Labdoor
| What we checked | What we found |
|---|---|
| Independent testing (IFOS) Verified | Listed in Nutrasource’s IFOS registry (entry VIVN0008) with lot reports. We opened the report for lot SG26050712. |
| Freshness (TOTOX at or under 26) Verified | TOTOX 4.73 in IFOS lot SG26050712 (IFOS limit 19.5) and 4.0 in Labdoor’s lot UC250438. |
| Stated EPA and DHA Verified | Two softgels: 1,500 mg EPA and 570 mg DHA claimed. IFOS found 1,573 mg and 640 mg; Labdoor found 1,596 mg and 640 mg. |
| A named source Maker’s claim | Anchovy, mackerel and sardine, with countries and FAO catch zones, from Viva’s answer to a customer question. |
| A sustainability certification Not verified | Not stated. The page says “sustainably sourced” without naming a certifier. |
| Lot or best-by date Verified | The IFOS report gives the lot and an expiry of 08/2028. Vitacost shows a best-by date for the bottle it ships. |
| Smell and taste Not verified | We have not handled a bottle. Viva says there is no fishy aftertaste; check the softgels when you open the bottle. |
What the labels mean
- Verified We opened an independent record that confirms it: a certifier’s listing, a regulator’s list or a lab report. It is linked under Sources.
- Maker’s claim The maker says so on its own page or label. We read it but found no independent record.
- Not verified We looked and could not confirm it, or the maker does not say. Treat it as unknown.
