Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • IFOS lists it. We opened the report for lot 18498 (expires 06/2028): TOTOX 6.94, peroxide 1.67 meq/kg, anisidine 3.6, mercury below 0.0123 ppm, lead below 0.0065 ppm and PCBs 1.93 ppb.
    • NSF’s Certified for Sport directory lists Momentous Omega-3 (60 softgels, two-softgel serving, lots shown as “All”). Momentous describes the mark as independent testing of every batch for purity, potency and label accuracy.
    • The label gives 800 mg EPA and 800 mg DHA in two softgels. The IFOS lot tested at 936 mg EPA and 931 mg DHA. Momentous also posts its own certificate for each lot (ten omega-3 lots when we looked). The one for lot 18498 lists TOTOX 3.6 and 424 mg EPA and 434 mg DHA a softgel, in triglyceride form, but names no lab.
    • It names its source: anchovies, sardines and mackerel from Norwegian waters.
    • At $39.99 for 30 servings it works out to about $0.42 per 500 mg of EPA plus DHA.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • The dose is high. Two softgels give 1,600 mg of EPA plus DHA, against 250 to 500 mg a day in our sources and dosing guide. Check with a clinician first if you take blood thinners or have atrial fibrillation (see omega-3 and heart health).
    • It costs about twice as much per 500 mg as the budget IFOS-listed oils, and the page names no sustainability certifier. It says only “sustainably harvested”.
    • The softgel is bovine gelatin. The oil also has natural lemon flavor, annatto color and lipase (an enzyme) added.
    • We read one IFOS lot report. NSF’s directory shows lots as “All”, so it does not list individual lots. Momentous’s certificate for the same lot gives a lower TOTOX (3.6) than IFOS’s (6.94), and it does not say who tested or when. Both are far below 26.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Momentous Omega-3 is one of the few fish oils we found in two independent programs. IFOS tests fish oils for potency, purity and freshness and publishes a report for each certified lot. NSF’s Certified for Sport program tests a product against its label and for substances banned in sport, and lists certified products in a public directory.

The lot we read was fresh and clean, with oxidation figures well under the limits. The dose is the catch. Two softgels give 1,600 mg of EPA plus DHA, several times the 250 to 500 mg a day our guide to sources and dosing gives for general health.

Momentous names where its fish come from and prices the oil above the budget IFOS options. If you do not need the NSF mark, the Viva Naturals and Sports Research oils cost less per dose.
