Reader ratings
WECK Mold Jars, 1/2 L (set of 6)

Glass jars with glass lids and natural rubber rings, so no plastic touches the food. The rings wear out and are sold separately, and the pages we read say nothing about lead, cadmium or BPA.

Best for Fridge and pantry storage for leftovers, soups, sauces and ferments, without plastic touching the food.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • The food-contact parts are glass and natural rubber. WECK’s FAQ describes its jars as soda-lime glass (about 70% quartz sand, 10% lime and 13% soda) and the rings as natural rubber.
    • The lids are glass, held on by two clamps each.
    • The set is made in Germany, according to the maker, and costs about $4 a jar.
    • WECK says its jars are dishwasher and microwave safe.
    • Replacement rings are sold separately: a bag of 6 is $2.10 to $3.00.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • The rings are a wear item. They are natural rubber, WECK advises hand washing them, and oil on the rim makes them stretch. The pages we read give no lifespan.
    • Glass is heavy and can break, so these suit the fridge and pantry better than a lunch bag.
    • WECK says the Mold jars are freezer safe only when used with its plastic keep-fresh covers, which brings plastic back into the picture.
    • The pages we read say nothing about lead, cadmium or BPA, and show no test report.
What to know Details worth knowing first

Our guide to reducing microplastics says to store and reheat food in glass, ceramic or stainless steel rather than plastic. WECK jars are one of the few options where nothing plastic touches the food at all: a glass jar, a glass lid, a natural rubber ring and a metal clamp.

They are designed for preserving and fermenting as much as for storing, which is why the system uses rings and clamps. For everyday leftovers they work well in the fridge. The ring is the part that wears out, so buy a spare bag.

The honest gap is paperwork. WECK describes its glass recipe, but we found no statement on lead, cadmium or BPA and no test report. If that matters to you, ask the maker.
