Food storage & kitchen

Containers and kitchen basics made of glass or stainless steel instead of plastic.

What we look for
  • Glass or stainless steel where food touches: glass, or 18/8 (304) stainless steel.
  • Lids and seals you can name: glass, steel, silicone, wood or bamboo, with the gasket material stated. A plastic lid should name its resin.
  • Written heat limits: oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher limits the maker spells out.
  • Replaceable parts: gaskets and lids you can buy again, so one worn part does not end the set.
  • No coatings, paint or printed inks on surfaces that touch food.
  • Heating food in plastic, including “microwave-safe” plastic.
  • Treating “BPA-free” as safe: replacements such as BPS and BPF have their own concerns.
  • Cracked, clouded or heavily scratched plastic or coated surfaces.
