Grain mills

Stone and burr mills for grinding your own whole-grain flour, with no plastic where the flour runs.

What we look for
  • Named stones or burrs: corundum-ceramic, natural stone or hardened steel, with the binder of any ceramic stone stated.
  • A plastic-free flour path: hopper, milling chamber and spout in wood, metal or glass, with any plastic part named and kept away from the flour.
  • Fine to coarse in one machine: an adjustable grind for bread flour and cracked grain, with an output rate stated.
  • Built for years: a motor rated for home milling (or a sturdy hand crank), a long warranty, and stones or burrs that can be cleaned and replaced.
  • A safety listing for electric mills: UL, ETL or CSA in North America (CE in Europe).
  • High-speed impact (“micronizer”) mills with plastic milling chambers.
  • “Stone” mills that do not say what the stones are made of.
  • Claims that fresh flour loses its nutrients within hours, made with no source.
