Austin Air HealthMate (B400)

A steel purifier with a very large carbon and HEPA filter rated for five years, listed by CARB as mechanical. Austin Air publishes no CADR, airflow or noise figure, so we cannot check its room rating. About $845.

Why we chose it What put it on our list 4 points
    • CARB lists Austin Air’s HealthMate HEPA Plus, model HM400, as Mechanical (notified 2010-10-14, order G-10-105). Austin Air’s current model is the B400. We matched the two by the numbering and by a retailer listing that pairs HM400 with Model B400, not by a statement from Austin Air.
    • The filter is large: Austin Air says it holds 60 sq ft of HEPA media and up to 15 lb of activated carbon and mineral media (over 780 cubic inches of the carbon blend).
    • Austin Air says the machine makes no ozone and uses no ionization, and that its HEPA material is rated at 99.97% of 0.3 µm and 99% of 0.1 µm.
    • Parts and warranty are clear: a replacement filter is $395, built to last 5 years under normal home use (about $79 a year); a pre-filter is $34.50. There is a 5-year machine warranty, a 5-year pro-rated filter warranty and a 30-day trial.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • Neither the product page nor the owner’s manual gives a CADR, an airflow or a noise figure; the manual only says there are three speeds. Austin Air’s Amazon title says “covers up to 1,500 sq ft”, with no test behind it. AHAM’s directory has no Austin Air entry. We cannot apply the two-thirds room rule or judge the noise.
    • The HEPA rating is for the “material”, from an unnamed source, not the assembled filter. CARB’s listing dates from 2010.
    • It costs about $845, weighs 47 lb and has a steel case.
    • Austin Air’s page cites a trial of HEPA air cleaners in children with asthma. The trial’s abstract does not name this brand. It found fewer unscheduled visits but no change in symptoms; see our guide.
What to know Details worth knowing first

The HealthMate is an old design and a plain one: a steel tower that pulls air in from all sides through two pre-filters, a deep bed of carbon and mineral media and a HEPA layer. It is controlled by a three-speed switch, and Austin Air says it has no ionizer. CARB’s list files the model as mechanical, which is what our air purifier guide looks for.

Its argument is the filter. Austin Air says it holds up to 15 lb of carbon blend and lasts five years, which is a very different offer from a thin carbon layer that is changed each year. If gases and odors matter to you, that is the point of this machine. See indoor pollutants for what particle filters do and do not remove.

Its weakness is that Austin Air publishes no CADR, airflow or noise figure, so we cannot check how big a room it suits or how loud it is. Its asthma pages point to a trial of HEPA cleaners that we cover in do air purifiers improve health: fewer unscheduled visits, but no clear change in symptoms. Ask Austin Air for a CADR before you buy.
