Candles

Candles that burn clean: a single named wax, a plain wick and no added fragrance.

What we look for
  • Pure, named wax: 100% beeswax (or another single wax the maker names), not a blend with paraffin. Few makers publish a purity test, so we say what backs the claim.
  • A plain wick: cotton, paper or wood, with no metal core.
  • No added fragrance: unscented, or scented only with ingredients the maker lists.
  • Honest sourcing: where the wax comes from, and whether it is filtered, bleached or colored.
  • Paraffin, and “beeswax blend” candles that do not give the percentages.
  • Synthetic fragrance oils, and “clean burning”, “soot-free”, “negative ions” or “purifies the air” claims with no test behind them.
  • Burning any candle in a closed room. Every flame gives off fine particles, so ventilate.
