Why we chose it What put it on our list 5 points
    • AHAM’s directory lists LAP-C511S-WUS at a smoke CADR of 301 (dust 298, PM2.5 299, pollen 319) and a 467 sq ft room. Our two-thirds rule gives about 450 sq ft.
    • CARB lists the model as Mechanical (notified 2026-09-09, order G-26-209). By CARB’s definition that means filtration only, with no ozone or ions.
    • It costs about $0.86 per CFM of smoke CADR ($259.99 divided by 301). On the same sum the Coway Airmega Mighty2 is about $1.12 and the Oransi Mod+ about $1.93 (our arithmetic from published prices and CADRs).
    • Levoit says the sealed HEPA system captures 99.97% of 0.3 µm particles, based on ASTM F3150-18 and independent third-party testing. It names no lab.
    • Filter prices and schedule are published: HEPA filter $59.99, rated up to 2 years; carbon filters $29.99 to $49.99.
Trade-offs What to weigh before you buy 4 points
    • Levoit’s maker, Vesync, has agreed to settle a New York class action (Sen v. Vesync) over its “HEPA” and “H13” wording on older Core and EverestAir models, and the court has not yet approved the settlement. Vesync denies wrongdoing and the case does not name the Eleva, but the 99.97% figure here also has no report behind it.
    • It is brand new: CARB first listed it on 2026-09-09 and Amazon lists it as first available on 2026-10-18, so there is no track record yet.
    • Levoit does not say how much carbon its carbon filters hold. The VOC and NO₂ readings come from Levoit’s own sensor, and we did not check them.
    • It is louder than the 300X at full speed (22 to 52 dB, 33 W), and a full filter set costs more.
What to know Details worth knowing first

The 500X is the larger of Levoit’s two Eleva purifiers. It uses the same plan as the 300X: a sealed particle filter, a separate carbon filter and a fan, with nothing electronic in the airstream. Our air purifier guide points to that design, and the wildfire smoke guide explains why a larger fan matters when smoke is the problem.

The case for it is the numbers that other people hold. CARB lists the model as a mechanical cleaner, and AHAM’s directory lists four CADR figures for it. Divide the price by the smoke CADR and it is among the cheapest clean air in our set.

The caveats are the HEPA claim, which is Levoit’s own, and the model’s age. Levoit’s maker is settling a class action over HEPA wording on older models, and this one reached CARB’s list in September 2026 and Amazon in October. If you want a longer track record, the Medify MA-40 sits in the same price band. Change the filters on schedule.
