Kefir is a fermented dairy source of live cultures, protein, and calcium, and the berries and chia add several grams of fiber to every glass.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Pour the kefir into the blender first so the frozen berries have liquid to sink into.
  2. Add the mixed berries, banana, chia seeds, vanilla, and honey if you are using it.
  3. Start the blender on low for 10 seconds, then switch to high and blend for about 45 seconds until no berry chunks remain.
  4. Taste, and add a splash of water if it is too thick or a little more honey if it is too tart.
  5. Pour into two glasses and drink within a few minutes, before the chia starts to thicken the smoothie.

Tips

  • Look for plain, unsweetened kefir with "live and active cultures" on the label; flavored bottles often carry several teaspoons of added sugar.
  • Keep everything cold. Heat is what damages the live cultures, so use frozen berries and kefir straight from the fridge.
  • Raspberries and blackberries leave tiny seeds. For a silkier glass, use a blend that leans on blueberries and strawberries, or pour the smoothie through a fine sieve.
  • Leftovers keep in a sealed jar in the fridge for a day. Shake well, since the chia will have thickened it.
