Tahini brings the healthy fats and minerals of sesame, dates sweeten it with fiber and potassium instead of refined sugar, and the milk and yogurt push the protein to roughly 15 grams a glass.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. If the dates feel firm or dry, cover them with warm water for 10 minutes, then drain them.
  2. Add the milk, yogurt, tahini, and dates to the blender and blend for 45 seconds, until the dates have dissolved completely.
  3. Add the ice, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt.
  4. Blend again for 30 to 40 seconds, until the shake is thick and frosty.
  5. Taste, and add one more date if you want it sweeter. Pour into two glasses and finish with a pinch of cinnamon.

Tips

  • Stir the tahini jar well before measuring, so the oil is mixed back in. A fresh, runny tahini tastes sweet and nutty, while an old jar can turn the shake bitter.
  • Dates sometimes hide a pit, so feel each one before it goes into the blender.
  • Use less ice for a thin, drinkable shake or more for one you can eat with a spoon.
  • For a dairy-free version, use almond milk and a plain coconut yogurt.
